The WALK for Vitiligo Awareness was organized in an effort to send the message that the discrimination faced by individuals with Vitiligo is all about COLOR but has nothing to do with RACE!
The location, The Brooklyn Bridge was chosen with the message to Bridge the Gap between ignorance and awareness!

ms. balarin,

what a marvelous idea! your efforts to increase awareness are an inspiration!

my best friend has vitiligo (actually, she's featured on this blog) and i've always cringed at having to call it a "disease" because i see her skin as something beautiful, natural...more lovely than uniform pigmentation, and perfectly reflective of the elegant complexity of her spirit.

also, you suggest a very interesting avenue by which to approach the study of the concepts of "race" and "color" in our society.

thanks!
